8 Matcha Spots in Paris
Matcha isn’t just having a “moment” – it’s having a full-blown Parisian love affair. While Japan and France have been borrowing from each other’s cultural wardrobes for well over a century (the French even coined the term japonisme to describe the craze for Japanese art, fashion, and theater in the 19th century), the fascination hasn’t slowed down one bit. These days, it’s less about woodblock prints and more about manga, anime, Japan Expo crowds, and yes… that bright green cup of matcha you see all over Instagram. The craze became so intense that Le Monde reported back in May on a looming global shortage of matcha due to this surging demand combined with heatwaves affecting crop sizes and US tariffs on Japan.
I’ll admit, the first time I tried matcha I wasn’t convinced. I thought it tasted a bit like, well, grass. But as I learned, and as with most things, much depends on the quality and preparation. When it’s done right, it’s smooth, slightly sweet, and surprisingly comforting – plus, it’s been marketed as the healthier alternative to your daily espresso, providing a longer and more stable increase in energy rather than coffee’s sharper, more intense burst. And in Paris, you’ll find no shortage of cafés putting their own spin on it.
So if you’re curious where to sip the best matcha and eat the best matcha delicacies in Paris, here are eight spots worth visiting, and what you should order from each.
