Photo of the Week – May 2, 2014

To acknowledge the public holiday la Fête du Travail which took place in France yesterday, this week’s photograph was taken on May 1, 1910, and shows demonstrators at la Pelouse de Madrid, which is part of le Bois de Boulogne, a large public park on the western outskirts of Paris. In 1907 it became customary for demonstrators to wear a sprig of muguet (lily of the valley) pinned to their jacket with a red ribbon. Today on May 1st, le muguet can be bought on the street and is offered to loved ones.
