Paris Vignettes: More Shoes in the City

The Paris Vignettes series features the inspired work of street photographer William “Bill” O’Such in themed installments

As I mentioned in a previous vignette, an enlightening guided tour with Explore Paris triggered this shoe-focused theme and opened up a fascinating new urban perspective for me.

I set out to photograph more shoes in Paris, and settled into a charming café near the Marie Curie museum. While sipping my tea, I observed a diverse array of chaussures passing by, ranging from sneakers to high heels to dress shoes. It was quite a spectacle, and capturing it proved to be quite a challenge. Subsequently, I strolled to the Jardin du Luxembourg, encountering a different assortment that included high boots and bicycles. Browsing my Paris archives, I uncovered prior instances of this theme, including a stunning pair of “J’aDior” shoes at an exposition and a couple of others captured during metro rides. Interestingly, my foray into doing a similar theme in San Francisco revealed a markedly different mix. If you are on social media, check out my Facebook or Instagram pages for more images.

Feel free to leave a comment if you’d like to see more “Shoes of Paris” themes in future vignettes!

William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. Inspired by Bresson, William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette.
