Photo of the Week – June 22, 2012
Photographing the Louvre’s Napoleon Courtyard at night makes for some exquisite images. I took this photo last week at around 10pm, when the crowds around the pyramids disperse and the courtyard becomes a more peaceful place. Photographers and passersby stop to admire the lit up Louvre and it’s glowing pyramids. Here are a few tips to taking photographs at night. An important part of night photography is a trusty tripod. Since your exposures will be longer in low light situations, you’ll need this to produce fine quality images without noise or blur. Using your camera’s manual mode is easier than it looks. Adjust your shutter speed and aperture using the in-camera light meter, then customize the brightness of the shot by turning the camera dial. Setting the camera on a 2 second timer will let your camera settle after you press the shutter button, so that there will be no accidental shake when the picture is taken. In overexposing night shots (making them brighter than the camera suggests), you can get more cloud detail and glowing lights. The longer the shutter speed (the time during which your camera’s shutter is open), the more reflective water will turn, creating a mirror-like effect in fountains and rivers. Another great spot to practice these techniques is at the fountains at Place de la Concorde.   Photo © Rachael Woodson Subscribe for FREE weekly newsletters.
