I quite liked the references that this week’s photo brought to mind. One would definitely be la Nouvelle Vague, French New Wave films by directors like Truffaut and Godard. À bout de souffle, Jean-Luc Godard’s first feature-length film which was released in 1960, specifically comes to mind. Another is the work of French art star Sophie Calle, whose piece Autoportrait (la filature) I recently saw at the Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain de Nîmes. For the piece, which was commissioned by the Centre Pompidou in 1981 for an exhibition on self-portraiture, Calle asked her mother to hire a private detective to follow her for one day. After, she retrieved the detective’s photographs and written account and created a self-portrait out of them.
