In honor of independence days around the globe, I chose this photograph that gives us a glimpse of la fête nationale française of 1914. It’s titled Fête nationale – bal de rue avec limonaire or National Day – street ball with limonaire. French flags, dancing couples, and a fairground organ (le limonaire) fill the photographer’s frame. This image was taken two weeks prior to the outbreak of World War I.
