Bastille Day, (La Fête Nationale en francais), commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, the event which marked the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison on July 14, 1789. For a view of the feux d’artifice (fireworks) that start around nightfall, head to the Champ de Mars, hilly Montmartre, or Tour Montparnasse for a great view of the entire city.
