Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris: A Favorite (Free!) City Museum
The Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris— the city’s modern art museum— is not on the typical tourist circuit, and is therefore one of the best kept secrets in Paris. Overlooking the Seine and the Eiffel Tower in a prime piece of real estate in the 16th arrondissement, the museum offers free entry to its permanent exhibition. (Paid tickets are required for the temporary exhibitions.) Dedicated to modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st centuries, the museum boasts works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and more. Not to be missed is Raoul Dufy’s La Fée Electricité, a monumental work commissioned for the Exposition internationale de Paris in 1937. (The 250 different colored panels take up an entire room up a staircase near the museum entrance.) In exciting news, the museum has unveiled a new presentation of the permanent collection. A recent article in Le Parisien points out the highlights; for example, in a room devoted to Robert Delaunay, the “Tour Eiffel” painting is showcased near a window where you can compare the artist’s rainbow effect with the real deal outside. The museum’s location right next to the Palais de Tokyo (contemporary art museum) means that you can make a day of it: pair the two museums together and enjoy a meal at the buzzed-about Les Grands Verres, the new restaurant inside the Palais de Tokyo opened by the dream team behind Le Mary Celeste and Candelaria. Note that the museum is one of the 14 City of Paris Museums that are incorporated in the public institution Paris Musées.     While I agree that the Musee D'art moderne de la ville is a fantastic museum, I certainly wouldn't call it a "best-kept secret" at all! I've been spending several weeks renting an apt. in Paris for over 25 years and was introduced to this lovely temple to modern art by my mother then. Everyone knows about it-and the fantastic views of Trocadero and Place La Concorde. The 16th is home to several of my favorite museums and bistros, and a great covered flea/food marche twice a week. We were even about to see an exhibit at the Musee D'art Moderne in 2009 when it closed suddenly-there had been a robbery of several masterpieces the night before. We were interviewed by BBC-TV, which was fun. But only tourists who just think the Louvre is the only worthwhile musee in Paris don't know about this treasure.
