La Planque Hotel: A Cool New Place to Stay in the 10th
Located between the trendy Canal Saint-Martin and Belleville, La Planque is the latest boutique hotel hoping to tap into Paris’s young and fashionable bobo crowd with its affordable style. The hotel has called on design agency DESJEUX DELAYE for the new project, with founders Dorothée Delaye and Daphné Desjeux stamping their signature style onto La Planque. The former apartment building has also allowed the pair to indulge in their love of retro chic, retaining authentic features of the property while updating it with their own modern designs. Inspired by the melting pot of the surrounding quarter, the furniture is a varied collection of vintage treasures gathered from local flea markets. Antique stained mirrors add to the aged feel of the hotel and help create space, with Delaye and Desjeux also repeating the curves of the mirrors in the fringed hanging light fittings. The lobby area – which was once a sweet shop – now serves coffee at the antique counter top with guests perched on velvet-covered stools, while the lounge area comes in the form of a cozy, charming library stacked with books and personal mementos. The tiny terrace adds a contemporary contrast to the vintage interiors with youthful pink painted walls and blue zellige tiles. The original winding staircase, typical of those found in Parisian apartments, has been restored to its former glory to lead guests up to the hotel’s 36 bedrooms. Each has been individually decorated in almost sombre shades of deep fir, khaki green, and grey, with Delaye and Desjeux adding highlights of blush pink, rust orange and mustard as the mood takes them. Once again curves are a repeated pattern, from the velvet-clad headboard to the writing desk, bringing an Art Deco feel to the décor and marrying together the old and the new. Also look out for the retro-inspired light fittings designed by the duo, playfully named “L’Hypocrite,” which, along with the rooms’ accessories of second-hand books and vintage wall phones, adds the finishing touch of stylish nostalgia. 3 rue Arthur Groussier, 10th.
