Fireworks in the Sand
Sandy waves rolling up to the shore on a dark night, with the occasional flash of fireworks is what’s most fashionable this spring and summer. The colors of sand – beige, white, off-white, gray, taupe – with brilliant bursts of orange, aqua and corals are the foundation for all the major designers this year.  The calm surface of a low tide, with giant bursts of waves and color, influence this sense of style.  Think sleek with explosions of frill.   Oscar de la Renta offers up off-white pantsuits, taupe business suits, sandy colored dress suits and Essaouira-yellow shifts. Chloe focuses on off-white baby doll dresses. Kenzo is big with stripes of reds and browns in his black-on-white collection.  Elie Saab is flirty, frilly, yet simple this season, keeping florals brash but never mixing with the frills.   Celine’s doing a lot with orange and hot mustard this season.  Cacharel focuses more on tiny gaillardia-sized prints on short skirts. Emanuel Ungaro breaks from the all-sand look to add 70’s-style circles of brown and pink, yet brings this look up to date by adding high-tide frills. John Galliano (Ungaro on speed) never let’s down with his hyper-dramatic style: think Black Beard meets Oliver Twist meets Spanish balladeer meets Cannes French waiter and you’ve got, well, John Galliano for women and men.  Dries Van Noten takes Galliano style down to a more relaxed notch by turning Sister Carrie into a loosened up Bohemian, sewing falling swags and dark lavender-blues into very sandy off-whites and taupes.   The long and short of it is that there’s no long and short of anything this year.  Everything is long and short, and as long as you’re using neutral sand as your base for style this season, and adding anything else in bursts or frills, you’ll be à la mode.
