The Siege of Paris: a Conversation With David Lawday
Thursday, July 6th, 11:00-12:00 (EST)
Join us for a captivating conversation with David Lawday, former Paris correspondent for The Economist and author of ‘A Time in Paris’, as he shares his insights on the historical events that inspired his latest book. Learn about the pitiless siege of Paris in 1870 when Prussian forces, led by Bismarck, surrounded the city and cut off communications for months, and the unlikely love story that unfolds amidst the chaos.
David Lawday is a Londoner by birth, schooled in Sussex and at Oxford University, and a Francophile from his schooldays thanks to an inspiring French master. From Oxford he joined Reuters and received his first posting as a journalist in Paris. He spent more than 20 years at The Economist where he was first Paris correspondent, later its correspondent in Washington DC and Berlin. But France was always in his blood, especially after he met and married a beautiful Parisienne, Noëlle. He has previously contributed to the New Statesman and Atlantic. He now lives permanently in Paris where he writes books. David has previously published Napoleon’s Master: A Life of Prince Talleyrand and Danton, both with Jonathan Cape.
