May 2010 Events in Paris

There are few pleasures like enjoying Paris in the month of May. The flowers are out in bloom, and the parks start to see the return of picnics that last well into the evening dusk. The leaves finally awaken and line the Seine with vibrant strokes of green, and the City of Light seems to come alive all over again. While being outside is glorious, there are some fantastic events lined up this month in Paris that are sure to lure you indoors.

Opera & Ballet

Opéra Garnier – www.operagarnier.fr

Tribute to Jerome Robbins, Choreographer Benjamin Millepied – Through May 10th

A true tribute to one of the 20th century’s most profound choreographers, you will find yourself engulfed in a world from jazz to comic movement.

La Bayadère, Choreographer Rudolf Noreev – May 17th – June 2nd

Set in India, the Opéra Garnier boldly described this ballet as “A stunning virtuoso and a bewitching Oriental fresco.” This ballet tells the story of the unrequited love between an Indian temple dancer, Nikiya, and a noble warrior, Solor.

Opéra Bastille – www.operagarnier.fr

Billy Budd, Conductor Jeffrey Tate – Through May 15th

An opera sung in English is not often found on the Paris stage. Based on the confrontation between good and evil, and set on a battleship this is considered to be one of the most grand stage designs in opera today.

Les Contes d’Hoffman, Conductor Jesus Lopez-Cobos – From May 7th – June 3rd

This opera was Offenbach’s final work. In fact, he died before he finished this piece, which has lent it to an infinite level of interpretation. This opera tells the tragic love story of a drunken poet who falls for not one, but four women and loses them all just as quickly.
